ARC Chimney Sweeps
Chimney Fire Prevention
Chimney fires often start with creosote buildup. Annual inspections and professional cleanings remove dangerous deposits and help keep your fireplace and home safe.
Annual · before first fire
Chimney fires are typically caused by creosote buildup that has been left untreated. When it reaches advanced stages, this highly flammable residue can ignite and reach temperatures up to 2,000°F or more, enough to damage the flue liner, ignite nearby framing, and spread rapidly through the home.
Our chimney fire prevention service focuses on identifying and removing creosote at every stage. Stage 1 is loose and brushable, Stage 2 is hardened and requires mechanical or chemical removal, and Stage 3 is glazed and must be treated before it can be safely removed. Each level presents increasing risk and requires the right approach to fully address it.
At ARC Chimney Sweeps, our CSIA-certified technicians perform a thorough inspection of your chimney system to identify cracks, blockages, or structural concerns. If damage is found, we review repair or relining options so you can make informed decisions before your next fire.
Preventive maintenance is the best protection against chimney fires, especially before peak burning season.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is creosote and why does it cause fires?
- Creosote is a combustible residue formed when wood smoke cools against flue walls. It builds through three stages: loose and brushable (Stage 1), tar-like and hardened (Stage 2), and a glazed crust (Stage 3). Stage 3 creosote is extremely flammable and is the leading cause of chimney fires. Annual sweeping keeps buildup from progressing past Stage 1.
- How do I know if I have Stage 2 or Stage 3 creosote?
- A professional inspection is the only reliable way to assess creosote stage. Signs that warrant an urgent appointment include a strong petroleum or tar smell near the firebox, very slow draft even with a good fire, and a crackling or rumbling sound during burning — which can indicate a chimney fire already in progress. If you hear that sound, close the damper and call us.
- When is the best time to schedule chimney fire prevention service?
- September or October — before you light your first fire of the season — is the ideal window. It gives our technicians time to assess creosote stage, complete any necessary chemical treatment, and schedule a follow-up relining appointment if the liner is damaged, all before you need the fireplace for winter heating.
- Can a chimney fire happen even in a gas fireplace?
- Creosote is wood-specific, so a gas-only fireplace does not produce creosote. However, gas fireplaces can still have debris blockages, deteriorating liners, and nesting animals in the flue — all of which can cause hazardous conditions. An annual inspection is still recommended for gas appliances.
